This Instant Pot Duo review is for anyone cooking their dog’s food at home and wondering whether a pressure cooker will save them time. Short answer: yes, for pressure cooking. A pot of turkey, rice and vegetables that simmers for an hour on the stove is done in a fraction of the time, and cleanup is one stainless pot. The slow-cook button is the weak spot. If your favorite recipes are all-day crockpot meals, keep your slow cooker.

I already covered the other side of this in my best slow cooker for homemade dog food guide. For this review I went through Instant Pot’s own specs and manual, independent kitchen testing, and owner feedback, and checked the numbers against their sources.

Instant Pot Duo Review: Specs, Price and What It Does

The Duo is the model that made Instant Pot a household name. It combines seven appliances: pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, sauté pan, yogurt maker and food warmer. For dog-food cooks, the pressure cooker, sauté and steam functions do almost all the work.

The 6-quart size is the sweet spot for one or two medium dogs. Because you can’t fill a pressure cooker to the brim, the usable batch is smaller than 6 quarts. More on that in the calculator below.

Build Quality and Design

The part that touches your dog’s food is a plain stainless steel pot, with no nonstick coating to scratch or flake. That matters to me because you’ll be stirring and scraping it every week. The outer housing is brushed steel and plastic, and the control panel uses buttons plus a +/− time setting that you learn in a batch or two.

The silicone sealing ring inside the lid is the one design flaw everyone mentions. It soaks up smells, so a batch of liver or fish can leave a scent that shows up in your next pot of oatmeal. Many owners keep a separate ring just for dog food. ThriftyClik also notes the ring should be replaced about every 12 to 18 months.

Performance Analysis

Pressure cooking: the reason to buy it

Pressure cooking is where the Duo shines. Instant Pot says it cooks up to 70% faster than traditional slow cooking, and ThriftyClik found dried beans done in about 30 minutes instead of 90. For dog food, that means ground turkey, brown rice and chopped vegetables are ready in one short cycle, not an afternoon. Remember that the time on the display doesn’t include the 10 to 15 minutes it takes to build pressure, or the release time afterward.

Slow cooking: the weak spot

Don’t buy the Duo to replace your crockpot. America’s Test Kitchen found that Instant Pot multicookers “could not successfully slow-cook dense, high-volume recipes such as beef stew or pot roast.” Owners report the same thing. One commenter on DadCooksDinner said that even on high, the pot wasn’t “even close temperature-wise to low on my crockpot.” If you love my crockpot dog food recipes, convert them to pressure cooking or keep using a slow cooker.

Sauté, steam and broth

The sauté mode browns ground meat right in the pot, so there’s no extra skillet to wash. Steaming is great for sweet potatoes and carrots you plan to mash for homemade food toppers. It’s also a fast way to make broth for frozen bone broth treats, as long as you follow the safety rules in the cheat sheet.

Pressure cooker dog food rules: fill no more than two-thirds full or half for rice, never feed cooked bones, no onion, garlic or added salt
Save these rules for batch day. Illustration: Pups Gourmet Kitchen
Bone broth safety: pressure cooking softens bones, but it doesn’t make them safe. Vetstreet warns that “cooked bones can splinter and cause choking, mouth injury, intestinal obstruction, or perforation.” Strain the broth well, skim the fat once it’s chilled, and never add onion, garlic, bouillon or salt. My list of ingredients you should never feed your dog covers the rest.

Living With It: Setup, Batch Day and Cleanup

Setup takes one water test run, which the manual walks you through. Expect a learning curve of two or three uses before quick release, natural release and the “burn” warning make sense. Most burn warnings come from thick food with too little liquid on the bottom, so add liquid first and layer rice or grains on top.

On batch day, I sauté the meat, add water or broth, layer in the rice and vegetables, then pressure cook. While it cools I set out containers. Portioning is the slowest part, not the cooking. My guide on how much homemade dog food to feed helps you size each container.

Cleanup is easy: the inner pot, lid and steam rack go in the dishwasher. Take the sealing ring out and wash it separately after strong-smelling batches.

Instant Pot Duo vs. the Alternatives

OptionPressure cookSlow cookBest for
Instant Pot Duo 6-qtExcellentWeakFast weekly batches on a budget
Instant Pot Duo Plus 9-in-1ExcellentWeakExtra presets, same core cooking
COSORI 6-qt multicookerGoodGoodOne machine that handles both styles
Dedicated slow cookerNoneExcellentAll-day, set-and-forget recipes

ATK singled out the COSORI 6-quart as a multicooker that “could slow-cook and pressure-cook well,” though it found it “a bit harder to use.” The Instant Pot Duo Plus adds presets, but it won’t cook your dog’s food any better. If you mostly slow-cook, a dedicated slow cooker from my slow cooker guide is the smarter buy.

What’s New in 2026

The Duo itself hasn’t changed in years, and at this price that’s a good thing: parts and replacement rings are everywhere. Instant’s newer Rio line is the one reviewers now rank highest. Yahoo’s January 2026 testing named the Rio 7-in-1 its best overall, describing it as taller and slimmer than the original Duo. For dog food both cook the same way, so buy whichever is cheaper that day. Homemade feeding keeps growing, as our 2026 homemade dog food statistics show.

Who Should Buy the Instant Pot Duo?

Best for:

Skip it if:

  • You mostly make all-day slow-cooker recipes
  • You feed several large dogs. The 8-quart or two batches will suit you better.
  • You haven’t settled on a balanced recipe yet. Start with my guide to nutritionally balanced homemade dog food and talk to your vet.

Alternatives to consider: a dedicated slow cooker, the COSORI 6-quart multicooker, or the Instant Pot Duo Plus if you want extra presets.

Where to Buy and How to Save

The Duo is almost always cheapest on Amazon, where it regularly drops below the $109.99 list price during sales. Buying direct from Instant Pot gets you the same 1-year warranty.

Final Verdict

8.0
out of 10 · Recommended for fast batch cooking

For homemade dog food, the Instant Pot Duo does its main job very well. Pressure cooking cuts batch day down, the stainless pot is easy to clean, and the price is hard to beat. It loses points for a slow-cook mode that doesn’t match a real slow cooker, a smell-holding sealing ring and a short warranty. If you cook dog food weekly and don’t need all-day slow cooking, it’s an easy yes.

Evidence: What Testers and Owners Say

“The Instant Pot Duo argument is simple: it does 7 things in one footprint.”ThriftyClik, Instant Pot Duo review, 2026
“Slow cookers are generally more reliable with a range of slow-cooker recipes than any Instant Pot we’ve tested.”America’s Test Kitchen
“Beef was still chewy after 14 hours because the machine didn’t have enough power to fully break it down.”America’s Test Kitchen, Instant Pot slow-cook test
“Cooks up to 70% faster than traditional slow cooking methods.”Instant Pot, official Duo product page

The pattern is consistent: testers praise the Duo’s speed and versatility, and they’re equally clear that slow cooking isn’t its strength. For dog-food cooks, that’s a fair trade. Pressure cooking is the function you’ll use every week. ThriftyClik also counts more than 150,000 reviews averaging 4.7 stars on Amazon. Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Instant Pot good for making homemade dog food?

Yes. Pressure cooking turns a slow simmer of meat, rice and vegetables into one short cycle, and the stainless inner pot is easy to clean. Use a balanced recipe and portion it by your vet’s feeding guidance.

What size Instant Pot is best for dog food?

The 6-quart fits most one- or two-dog homes. Because you can only fill it about two-thirds full (half for rice and grains), multi-dog homes with large breeds may prefer the 8-quart.

Can I slow-cook dog food in the Instant Pot Duo?

You can, but it runs cooler than a traditional slow cooker. America’s Test Kitchen found Instant Pots struggled with dense slow-cook recipes, so pressure cooking is the better setting, or use a dedicated slow cooker.

Is it safe to make bone broth for dogs in an Instant Pot?

Yes, if you strain it carefully. Cooked bones can splinter, so never feed them, and remove all fragments. Skim the fat after chilling and don’t add onion, garlic, bouillon or salt.

How long does homemade dog food last in the fridge?

Treat it like people leftovers: about 3 to 4 days in the fridge, per USDA leftovers guidance. Freeze the rest in portions.

Why does my Instant Pot smell like the last thing I cooked?

The silicone sealing ring absorbs odors. Many owners keep a separate ring just for dog food and replace rings about every 12 to 18 months.

Instant Pot Duo or Duo Plus for dog food?

For dog food they cook the same way. The Duo Plus adds extra presets. Buy whichever is cheaper when you shop.

Is the Instant Pot Duo inner pot dishwasher safe?

Yes. The stainless inner pot, lid and steam rack are dishwasher safe, with the lid and rack on the top rack. Wipe the base by hand.
